Moving On From Blogger To Wordpress, Soon...

Dear everybody,

I had some serious technical issues since last post and looks like blogger ditched again. I am moving on to word press now, but with a different name. I am not tech-savvy, so I probably will copy-paste the existing content just to make sure I dont mess up with anything. Will post links to new blog here very soon. Upgrade to better things is not as easy as it seems. To scrap your one year effort and pain and emotions and move on is just a nightmare. But, I need to take the risk. I am praying and fingers crossed, I will still have your support like always. I had exciting projects and posts lined up, in vain! Please stay tuned for the update, which will be done very shortly. Everything hopefully gets back to normal sooner than anticipated....

Sponsored Post - August 2015

Though the numbers are sprinkling, I am way too blessed to have consistent followers since my blog launch. Initially, the intention was to be "that" Little Black Book. Might not be a proper detour since the launch, but my blog is no longer what it was supposed to be. Every post done here has a plethora of emotions attached to it except the picturesque ones. This beautiful journey has blessed me with followers-turned-friends! They are the ones who keep me going and make me feel like I am at the top of the ecosystem!

Sai from Chennai, an ardent follower of my blog since early days, sent me this extremely elegant saree as a part of product promotion. Thank you very much for the trust and confidence, Sai! She insisted on remaining anonymous, but I couldn't help share! Sorry, Sai but this is worth sharing!

Technically, this is a plain pure kota silk saree in South-Sea Pearl / wheatish gold colour with two tone (gold and silver) border. Its handwoven and here is what to expect! No offence, but please understand this is not the regular kota silk we get in every second store, but very fine quality with that satin feel. Picture shown is self-explainatory, but its gossamer in reality. Its a delicate weave in a colour that literally suits every skin tone. Strictly, no age group. Its as light as a feather and very festive by all means! You can team it with a brocade blouse in colors of your choice! The more, the merrier!

Price inquiries, please mail on sareesoiree@gmail.com or inbox!

Himanshu Verma, The Saree Man - Part II

If you are new to my blog and landed on this post as a first, please read Part I to know more about the unrivalled Himanshu Verma! Dont miss out on this!

The Man & His Saree

Saree shopping is one art I am yet to master since forever! Since I met the Saree Man, I grew breathlessly impatient to know his perspective on the same! Pleasantly surprising, the logic was similar but the interpretation was passionate! Besides his own events, he shops for sarees mostly while travelling! There is no occasion attached to it as such, except when he is at his lowest! Even the toughest cookie has a gooey heart! Furthermore, he goes out and randomly collects sarees from generic, but probably exotic places. Himanshu's love for sarees can only be measured by the butterflies every time he finds a saree he cant resist! Only, days would have passed by the time realization hits hard. That saree haunts him so bad, so he goes back and gets hold of it! He says, "We go through a lot and lot often, but there is that saree meant for you! You just know it!" What a relief to know that the Saree Man is no exception to temptation, either! Himanshu loves Dastkar and swears by Delhi Nalli for their wide range. He finds their range not-that refined, but very affordable and competently priced. Delhi Nalli has a better range, especially Pochampallys and Gadwals. Its his second home when in doubt!

Being the Saree Man and the captain of Red Earth, it is understood he is associated with a plethora of designers. Both established and emerging ones, but not necessarily the big daddies of the fraternity! He loves working with the younger lot who represent compact and independent brands! Well, I agree big things start small!

Cant get enough of it, sigh!!!

I believe everything Saree Man does has a cause and effect! I wanted to know his take on handloom and the powerloom industry! As much as I thought, he loves handlooms! "Its the speciality of India. Its really a marvel where people can create magic with their hands. Earlier, I was into curating painting but curating textiles is an undervalued form of art. Its a piece of art! Even till date, we have access to a wide variety. As of powerloom, we cant ignore the market dynamics. Considering it is a personal choice, but fun experience!"

That's the nerve, Himanshu!

Undoubtedly, Himanshu is well-versed in the saree zone! I couldn't stop myself asking how quick can he drape a saree! Amazingly, 3 to 4 minutes! Let's say, under 5! It takes him a little more than a kurta or jeans! He says, "Over the time, you just know how to do it!" Personally, I find the drape clumsy especially mastering the pleats! Thanks to the geographical constraints! I authorize my statement, but the Saree pundit says "I cant get over when women say the drape is so cumbersome!" Ahem...

Himanshu is entitled to be negligent with the drape while at home. At times, he is not happy with the drape and apparently has to do it again. Welcome to the club, Sweetheart! But once he is out, seems it stays comfortable till the end of the evening. He says something I dont want to hear! "I can manage!" Drat!

Thanks to the mass movements every now and again, I never understood why the Saree is blown out of proportion when it is pretty much here! Why do we need carnivals to promote something which has been a part of our ethnic identity since forever? Himanshu says, "Unfortunately, Saree is not an ethnic identity! Not any more! Its a frightful scenario especially with regards to culture, religion, clothes and education. Sadly, its not a part of urban India. Even in the rural aspect, its changing drastically by women adapting salwars. Younger generation, no girl wears a saree today! Its totally not fashionable any more! Its just not a mainstream culture, especially in the urban context. We, The Saree Combatants, are trying to make difference in a small way and connect back. As of numbers, its a small fraction. Yes! We need more initiatives to make Saree fashionable. We are excited how popular the culture is, but the promotion is a full minority situation yet. Who wears Saree to a mall ? Only the older generation! In art community, there is no place for the Saree. See West Bengal and South India. There are more sarees, especially in the rurals!

Inspite of the identical yardage, Saree is sophisticated to some and ordinary to some! I wondered what defines the difference! Himanshu believes it all boils down to the usage! Its accepted that working class in rurals like farmers live in saree every day! They use it to its most advantage! Urban context, power sarees are adopted and probably confined to service-oriented industries like Corporate and Hospitality! The numbers are sprinkling, though! Himanshu wants Saree here, there and everywhere! To him, its elegance what really defines the difference!

No offence! Saree was, is and will always remain a personal statement to me! To Himanshu, its the other way around! Its connected with the culture and tradition. He recommends to choose the drape and the garment that works for you. Himanshu prefers Saree for any occasion as long as its not his cousin's wedding! He gut-wrenchingly says, "Who wants to scandalize the family? Sadly, because you are a man!"

Does Himanshu see Saree as another hash tag for the day? Is it going to stay here forever, "dif tor heh smusma," (Vulcan for LIVE LONG AND PROSPER) contenders like him! He doesnt see Saree as another hash tag for the day, Although getting others to wear the saree as they like is a real evolution, he finds certain campaigns silly. As long as the so-called campaigns are not gimmicky, he assures its a journey of who they are! He finds those initiatives great! "I may not love all of them, though! Saree is here to stay and is not going anywhere. The numbers are tiny, but its still cultural and aesthetic in mind!"

Rest, to be continued...

For The Love Of Handloom / Handmade

Narendra Modi is all set to launch National Handloom Day on August 7th, so Chennai has been chosen for the event as its bountifully abundant! No argument and strictly, no offence! Thanks to social media, entrepreneurs and increasing mass movements, handloom and handmade are going places and lauded like never before!

To love handmade and handloom, you dont have to be a conservationist. For me, it was a conscious decision! Everybody has a different perspective to support a commendable cause! We dont see things as they are, but we see them as we are. Irrespective of its size and price, the feel-good factor is irreplaceable when you support a genuine cause! Everything handmade is made out of love and enjoyed to its core throughout. You buy any handmade product, you support the artisan directly. You give them a livelihood to sustain the chamelionic cruel market strategies.

Everything handmade has a personal aspect involved. It has a heart to it! When you buy, its the most beautiful way of rewarding their efforts! You support their vision and celebrate humanity! You help them achieve financial independence and build their confidence like nobody's business! That confidence results in more creativity! We are all born with the ability to change someone's life, so we should definitely not give up the course-altering chance!

Labels are for jars, not for the real talent! Any exhibitions or such supporting communities, your interaction with the artisan gets personal. That gleam and pride to convince you are unparalleled! They want you to see what others dont! You buy, you know where your money goes! You feel proud for being the reason behind their smiles! For the artisan, the end product is love, time, attention, soul, tears, energy, thoughts, skill, detail, frustration, commitment, effort, pain and the list goes on and on and on! Sustainability comes with a premium, so its ethically fair to pay the price!

The way you give a gift is worth more than the gift itself! Next time, try and gift handmade things than store-bought ones! Trust me, the essence feels great inside out. You know what I mean if you have already been there and done it! Every time you look at a handmade product, try visualize the artisan.

We live in an era where we bargain with the street vendors, but pay dear to the big daddies of business! Go out and support the art of your neighbourhood because its worth your everything! We dont need a reason to help people! If we do, its a win-win situation for both! Everybody goes home happy :)

Give Away Alert - T&C* Apply :)

Dearest Darlings,

Though a simple Thank You would be an underplay, I sincerely thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the love and the likes! Special bow Thank You to Gaurang Shah, Shreedevi Chowdary Nekkanti, Himanshu Verma, Mamta Reddy, Rachana Reddy, Mira Sagar and Aruna Chandrala for recognizing my efforts!

That's not me, just in case :)

I know many of you are yet to religiously Facebook-like my page, but boy am I glad at least you are finding time to come back for more! I started this blog to support multiple causes! With every post, I want to get better and make it more appealing to you all. I might fail you seldom, but I will definitely strive harder. To me, every LIKE counts as I know they are not paid for. I know where you all are coming from, too!

I am blessed to be where I am today and I take nothing for granted! I humbly request you all to share my blog with your friends and family. The more, the merrier! As a token of gratitude, one of you will receive this beautiful dupatta with hand-painted Kalamkari on handwoven fabric. I am still in the Kalamkari hangover, hence this is the wise choice! I paid for the dupatta and nobody sponsored, so kindly understand this is a genuine gesture!

I always wondered what is the right way to blog, the ethics, dos and dont's etc! I dont care any more as this is no competition. We all (include me) like random pages just because Facebook tells us to! We forget about them later and move on! Dont know how this sounds, but I am promoting the sweat and blood of people on my blog! The best part is none of these super stars asked me to do so! It was just a conscious decision! Their efforts should not go waste and unnoticed! Just because somebody is dolled up like an angel, doesnt mean they are redundant. Please understand, they are promoting somebody or something for a cause! If one person benefits from their work, its definitely worth your while! As a matter of fact, any blog or page or entity that promotes such things should never go unnoticed!

I have not confined my blog to celebrities only! I talk about everybody and anybody who work towards their own cause! You are talented, you are our celebrity! Come, write to us if you have a story to share. Big or small, doesnt matter! Don't let your efforts go waste! If you agree with what I say, please share my blog and help me reach my goal! Its a harmless win-win situation :)

T&C* - Shipping within India only! NRIs, I can ship it across to your friends or family!

Mamta Reddy, The Reviver Of Kalamkari

If you worship hand-painted Kalamkari on hand-woven fabrics, your search ends at Mamta Reddy! With all due respect, I idolize Gaurang and Sashikant Naidu. But, Mamta Reddy is the driving force behind these haute couturiers!

The intricacy involved makes her spin off a "one time investment" in a work of art. No matter where what is depicted how, the end result is a collector's piece! Kalamkari art is very distinctive in its own right, but Mamta Reddy beautified it further with her signature style.

Other than outright Kalamkari, she fused Kalamkari with Ikat and Chikankari to make it more appealing and exotic. What an aesthetic sense! She has infused tradition the contemporary way. In this era of catalogued drapes, it's such a sight to sore eyes!

Her work has been lauded by couturiers Sashikant Naidu, Neeta Lulla, Sabyasachi Mukherji, Rohit Bal and the like. All Gaurang stand-alone stores are adorned with her art, heavily! Not to mention the celebrities from all possible fraternities who promote her work! Probably the list gets longer every season! Thanks to Mamta Reddy, there is no death to art as long as it is loved this way!

Himanshu Verma, The Saree Man - Part I

If you are new to my blog and its your first post here, this is a virtual rendezvous with Himanshu Verma, the Saree Man! If you wonder why this interview is happening on a fashion blog in the first place, my blog is a platform for talent with a cause! The efforts behind the scenes are most accomplished and they should never ever go waste! As simple as that! Thank you very much, Himanshu for your valuable time, consideration and contribution...

The spirit of life...

Did you wake up one day and become the Saree Man? How did the transition happen?

It was a slow transition, but a natural transition. I started wearing sarees since I started curating in 2006. I wore them for my events, art shows and festivals. It was a very organic process from starting to wear the Saree to gradually becoming the Saree man.

Saree Man, the man in the saree or Saree Man, the saree on the man? Who garners attention the most?

All of that and me! I started calling myself Saree Man! It caught on with the Press and they wrote about it! Back then, I was the only man in Delhi who wore saree publicly (still am the only one). The attention aspect is very incidental since I wear saree for the love of it.

Perfect poster boy...

How many sarees do you own?

Its a tiny collection of about 70 to 80 sarees, but its growing as I get to acquire more and more at events! (My Jealousy Meter just blew hearing that...)

Why Saree and not any other masculine drape? Does Saree deserve more than what it gets?

Any drape is gender neutral. Nothing to do with masculinity or femininity. Its not ugly if women are in dhoti. But if a man is in saree, its out of the blue! See the Buddhist monks!

Marigold Man...

Why did you want to drape and promote? Was there no other alternative ?

Initially, it was not for promotion. (Still isn't) The draping aspect was out of love.  Its independent of what it means. As a part of my work, I was playing with it and discovered the garment!

Is Jai Saree Clan a real thing?

No, its not! Wrote that in a funny piece! The greeting caught on with Saree lovers and patrons of the festivals. During the festival, hum jaise kuch bhi bolte hein...so we started using that!

Beating the blues, Himanshu way...

Saree Man, Red Earth, 1100 Walks and The Genda Phool Project! Boy, that's quite a mouthful!!! How do you establish your priorities?

Some days, I wake up and dont know what to do!I am like, "Should I work on this or that?"
The Genda Phool Project has taken a back seat for now until something comes up. At the moment, we are focused on Red Earth, promoting the Saree through Saree Festival and there is 1100 walks! I cant devote all of my time to everything. Its the creative time I can manage. Its challenging then to take it to the next level!

Is Saree an everyday thing for you?

You can kind of say so! At home, I drape a dhoti or wear a pyjama, but I am constantly playing with the saree. Very often, but not every day I work with drapes.

Collage of head turners...

In the process, did you invent any new drape?

I am yet to study all 108 drapes. When I go out,  I experiment. A lot of women experiment with drapes these days.

What does your wardrobe consist of?

Apart from sarees and dhotis, I have tons of kurtas, pyjamas, some skirts, two pairs of jeans and about 4 to 5 trousers.
